I finally came to the art of tapestry weaving after many years of knitting and spinning as casual hobbies. As someone with no formal artistic training or experience in drawing or painting, Kennita’s “Elements” course has given me an opportunity to explore and appreciate all the visual arts in perspectives and language previously unknown to me. Tapestry aside, I am starting to understand why a painting or sculpture or sketch appeals to me, and how to analyze and talk about it. Kennita’s lessons and videos are thoughtfully assembled and the suggested exercises have had me re-thinking my supposed limitations when it comes to drawing or watercolors or collage. Kennita’s applications of artistic theory in the textile realm have been mind-opening for me on three levels. 1.) The clearly prepared video demonstrations of tapestry technique and usage are invaluable for a beginner at the loom. The assignments are basic enough for mastery, but allow for exploration and individual expression. 2.) The Zoom Critique Sessions allow me to connect with others all over the country and abroad who are on the same path of discovery. We share our work with each other which, despite some initial apprehension on my part, has proved invaluable. These sessions bring validation and encouragement that fuel my desire to keep going and to try something new. 3.) Through her video presentations and associated links, Kennita has introduced me to a realm of textile work and a community of tapestry artists that I didn’t even know existed. I find myself being led in directions of interest and enjoyment that are refreshing and promise to sustain me.
There is some much more to “Elements” than gaining knowledge. It has provided a wonderful new framework for experiencing art, whether in the Gallery, or at my loom, or even looking out at the scenery. Take this class!

Since embarking on the Elements course, my weaving practice has really developed technically. I enjoy the flexibility of the course which means I can fit it around my job, I like the way each element is covered, with slides and exercises and videos of techniques which are very useful to refer to, and the critiques are a great way to get feedback. I have recommended this course to other weavers, because it is an enjoyable way to develop your weaving practice at your own pace.
I really enjoyed the class and class mates. I learned some new techniques that have really enriched my weaver vocabulary.
i have taken many online courses. this is right up there if not the best. here’s my list of why to enroll
1. cost. this is basically a college level course. the fee that is charged is much less. you do get your bang for the buck
2. what i liked most was looking at the same elements in art and tapestry
3. high quality slide shows. clearly there was a great deal of thought put into it
4. various excersises. with encouragement to try. ms tully encourages to have fun
5. beyond basic tapestry techniques
6. tons of resources
i have taken other courses with ms tully. in this one i think she has reached her pinnacle as a teacher

This study group grew out of a discussion from critiques in 2022 and continues through the present day. The group began by working through the book "The Making of Modern Tapestry" by Silvia Heyden.
Unfortunately, this book has now become scarce and difficult to obtain.
Anyone is welcome to join at any time.
