Welcome to Tapestry 101

Tapestry weaving is a weft-faced weaving technique. It has a rich history and is one of the oldest forms of woven textiles. Today, tapestry has become a popular art form.

It is my hope that you will learn the basic techniques in this introductory course and have the confidence to create beautiful tapestries of your own!

The course is taught with video support for each technique as well as a written explanation below the video. It begins with information on materials and terminology and follows with warping the loom and the following techniques: horizontal stripes, vertical stripes, dots, blocks and slits, diagonals, and curves.

The second part encourages you to show me your work and start designing your own.

The course ends with a list of resources and suggestions for what comes next.

If at any time, you get stuck or have a question, each lesson has a place for discussion at the end of the text. Please put any comments or questions there. I will be monitoring the course on a daily basis.

You will soon be creating works of art you can feel proud to hang on your wall!

Journaling

Here's a suggestion: I'd love to see you start a tapestry journal from your first piece. It's a great way to keep up with what you have learned.

Warping the Loom

The first step is to warp the loom. This is done in multiple ways, but here we will focus on warping the very simple frame loom.

I want you to think of this as if you are making your own canvas out of wood and string! The canvas gives you the support - foundation - to create your work of art!

Finishing Methods

Two finishing methods are shown here. The simplest way is to cut the warps and tie off.

The second method is used when a hem was woven.

Your Turn: Putting it All Together

Using one or all of these techniques, I'd love to see what you create! Put some colors together, make some drawings, and have some fun!

You can send me your photos and I'll post them here. At this point, I don't think there is a way for you to add a photo in the classroom.

I'm also thinking of adding a zoom call, webinar, or presentation of some type to answer any questions you might have. If this is something you'd like to see me add, please let me know!
